No Man’s Sky: A Spacefarer’s Diary

No Man's Sky: A Spacefarer's Diary

Captain’s Log: Journey to the Center

Captain’s Log. Welcome to Saevodoi Seboth. I know chances are you might never find me or this planet I’ve claimed. But for what it’s worth, there’s the name. And I may be alone here. If you don’t count the freakishly tall emerald-crusted deer that almost curb stomped me minutes ago.

I was supposed to be heading to the Galactic Center! Discovering things that hopefully no one has stumbled upon yet. Instead, I’ve crash landed on this arid planet with a little too much radiation, an atmosphere toxic to Human life, bizarre flora and fauna, and… rocks floating in the air.

The ship’s been trashed. There’s smoke coming from the starboard nacelle, and sparks coming out the other. My suit isn’t doing so swell either. The onboard AI keeps yapping about support systems being low. And the intense heat isn’t helping. There are some caves nearby. Glowing plants keep the tunnel illuminated with green and red hues. But I can’t stay in there forever. I’m going to have to get off this rock.

And the only way to get off-world? Materials. Lots of them. Good thing I carry a handy dandy multi-tool!

Analysis has proven that this planet has an abundance of resources. I just have to look in the right places. Iron, carbon, even plutonium. Life support’s back up to speed, and I can maybe fix my ship! But maybe the best news is I’m not alone. I have spotted two corvettes flying overhead. Tried to flag them down (with a mining laser, no less), but neither of them seemed to pay any notice.

I then ran into a mechanical drone that attempted to fry my face off–a Sentinel, it was called. Needless to say, there’s intelligent life on this planet. And that is a great sign! Where there’s ships, there’s got to be a trading post or landing port somewhere. Hope is not lost. I’m heading to where I think those ships are going!

I have not found a port, but I have come across these strange ruins. Upon contact, they became animated with light and motion. Impressions and visions. A message of a warrior race and perhaps an old god. Now I know a little of an alien language. “Interloper”… “Education”… they just seem like random words to me. Well, what matters is I’m alive, and I have yet another story to bring back home. IF I get home.

In the distance, it looked like it might’ve been a landing pad. Too bad it’s not. It seems I have found an abandoned post. I have documented its location and claimed it for later reference. There are a number of these abandoned posts. I can see them in the distance, but with no movement or activity. Whatever happened on this world before my crash land, people either left in a hurry… or worse, they didn’t make it at all.

At last, a port! I have stocked up on materials, sold off some trinkets and ore, and I’m ready to return to my ship to repair it. And I met a new, albeit not-too-pretty face today. Didn’t understand half of what he said, but those handful of words I had learned from the ruins helped. We concluded our meeting with a trade of some materials for a new and improved multi-tool. Things are looking up for me. But once I reach my ship, I’m going to have to make a decision. Should I stay? Or should I go? There’s still so much of the world to see!

I’ve returned to my ship. It’s been some days since I had left it behind. She’s all patched up now. But with the night descending over Saevodoi Seboth, I’ve decided to wait until the new dawn. It’s not home, but I think I’ve grown a little attached to this planet. You never have three moons to gawk at back home.

And these ruins—I want to know more about them. I’ve also logged tons of plants and animals. But I’ve a mission to complete. Tomorrow, it’ll be time to leave this planet. Who knows what waits for me out there? I just know it’ll be equally as fascinating as this world.

Saevodoi Seboth, farewell.

Final Thouhgts on No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky is big. Like YUUUUUGE. There’s so much to see and much to do. And it’s beautiful in all it’s lonely splendor. It’s not just an exploration game, however. It is definitely also a survival game. The little bit of inventory space at the start makes for a rough beginning as you’re trying to gather materials.

But once you hit your stride and expand your inventory space, it goes from survival to fun exploration! (And then back to survival whenever you need to fix your suit and life support again)

And make no mistake, this is just the beginning of the No Man’s Sky experience. I’m excited to see what awaits me beyond the green skies of Saevodoi Seboth! And I’ll be sure to let you know what I find beyond those clouds. Beyond that sky.
