Small Streams Big Dreams: Lt. Eddy

Written by Tanner Banks, Jan 4 , 2017, at 2:25 p.m.

It’s time to let it rip like a Beyblade, and get ready for some spicy pranks. Because it’s time to join the ever growing army of fans for Lt. Eddy. This Canadian gamer/SFM guru proves that you can do more than just one kind of video in the YouTube world. When he isn’t stringing headshots together in Counter Strike or Overwatch, Lt. Eddy is making his own computer animations using Valve’s Source Film Maker, or SFM. Now that he’s streaming his exploits along the way, viewers are in for more laughs than they could bargain for.

Lt. Eddy – Origin Story

Ever since he was a kid, Eddy had a passion for creating things. He and his friends would take his camera and make “weird puppet shows”. While he admits that the videos are still on YouTube, they are hidden away in the depths of the website. That love of creation followed him into his adult life where he worked in television as an assistant editor. But with the growing concern that television would be phased out by the advent of the internet, Lt. Eddy decided to make a bold move. On the side, he started a YouTube channel that would have “no agenda” and something he vowed to simply have fun with.

After finding some success on YouTube an opportunity of sorts arose. One of the production houses that Lt. Eddy worked for went out of business. Taking this as a sign of the times, he decided to make the jump towards YouTube. Since then, “things have been going pretty well so far” according to him.

Source Film Maker

While his gaming channel has been growing rapidly in the past months, Eddy got his start somewhere else. Taking his love of film making as a child with his formal training in film school he discovered his niche. 3D animation allowed him total control over the process while giving him an outlet for his creativity. Whether he’s doing original content, animating comics, or other YouTuber’s Eddy always makes sure that time and effort is put into each video. While his primary animation channel hasn’t been active as of late, he promises to do more and more with the channel as time goes on.

Here is a taste of some of the animations you can see on his channel.

Let the Games Begin

When he wasn’t busy making SFM animations, Lt. Eddy would hop onto games like Counter Strike and Overwatch with his friends and record whatever happened. And what happened turned out to be magic. Combining his skill for the games he played with humorous highlights from himself and his friends, Eddy captured lightning in a bottle. Mixing two of popular gameplay video styles Eddy was able to double dip with his viewers. Viewers would be able to watch Lt. Eddy nail headshots as Widowmaker in one clip, while watching him spin around like a top playing Winston in the next. That mixed with smooth editing created an enjoyable and high quality set of videos.

Eddy and his friends always carry an anything goes attitude rife with snarky comments toward one another and jokes a plenty. Whether it’s his friend Geek raging at the game and breaking his mouse, Tizen jumping off the map, or the many random teammates who mistakenly call him “Little Eddy” laughs are sure to follow.

But with the success of the gaming videos have come challenges as well. While many people would enjoy his gaming videos, it created a mixed reaction from his fans. “For every 1,000 subscribers I’d gain, I would lose 250.” While some people loved to watch his gaming videos, others just wanted to watch his SFM videos and vice versa. So to make sure he didn’t alienate his viewers in the future, Eddy started his second channel, Lt. Eddy Games. But the fun doesn’t end there.

From Twitch Shooter to Twitch Streamer

While he cut his teeth on twitch shooters like Counter Strike, Lt. Eddy found a new Twitch obsession. After many people wanted to see the raw and uncut footage he decided to give the people just that. Now you can catch Lt. Eddy streaming on Twitch during the day and at night as well. Whether he’s drunkenly playing anime visual novels, AWPing his way through CS:GO or climbing up to Master rank on Overwatch good times follow this Lieutenant.

And the best part is that every stream gets recorded, so you never know what moment will make it to the next episode. With new games being played like Rainbow 6: Siege, and more on the horizon you’ll have to tune in to see what’s next. So if you want to see what’s possible on any given stream I’ve linked one of Eddy’s most infamous moments in Overwatch.
