Tomb Raider Gets Primal

from Warner Brothers Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Square Enix Limited, and GK Films

The Curiosity

Warner Brothers Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Square Enix Limited, and GK Films prepare to bring the Core Design, then Eidos Interactive, and more recently, Square Enix property to the big screen again. Angelina Jolie would play Lara Croft in 2001, and 2003. At this time, video game movies had just begun to influence movie theaters. You take what works in the video game, for example Resident Evil’s fear factor. A film production company fits this into the three-act structure of the movie. What happened? Some movies were decent successes. Others just did not hold the line. However, video game movies continue to grace the cinema.

The Story

The newest Tomb Raider will release March 16, 2018. It takes a younger Lara and allows her to grow into the role of the “raider”. Please read the synopsis below.

“Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen.  Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class.  Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone.  Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.  But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.  Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.  If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.”

Alicia Vikander, of Ex Machina fame, stars in the movie. You gather greats like Dominic West, of Money Monster and The Wire, Walton Goggins, of Django Unchained, and Daniel Wu, of American Movie Classics’ Into the Badlands. Do not forget Oscar nominee Kristin Scott Thomas, of The English Patient. Roar Uthaug, of The Wave, is this movie’s director.

Video game movies, as comic books movies currently do, need a time to excite the public. Video game experiences are brief moments in time, in most cases. The cinema has the chance to create a new kind of experience. The great video game movie has a place. It has not happened, yet, but this could be that opportunity. Tomb Raider could have the influence of 2008’s Iron Man, 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, or 2017’s Wonder Woman. It  not just a hope, but is necessary for video games. Below is the teaser for this film. The full trailer comes out tomorrow.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons are Tomb Raider’s scriptwriters. Graham King, of The Departed, acts a producer of this movie. The executive producers are Patrick McCormick, Denis O’Sullivan and Noah Hughes.
